Open source media editing software

Open source tools for media editing. There are several media authoring (or editing) tools available in the market. Most of the popular tools are commercially sold. Here is the list of some open source media editing software which are potential alternatives for personal and commercial usage:
  1. Audio editing :
    1. This is a very capable open source multi tack audio editor and recording application, available for windows, Linux and Mac user. Tranvereso is an alternative to more popular commercial applications such as Sony Acid pro and Adobe audition.

    2. Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/) :




      Like Traverso, Audacity is another popular open source audio editor which houses similar impressive functionalites. Audacity is a free software which supports cross-platform digital audio editing and recording application. It is compatible with Windows, Mac OS X, Linux and BSD. All types of audio, including podcasts can be post-processed  using Audacity. Effects such as normalization, trimming and fading in and out can be given. Audacity has also been used to record and mix entire albums, such as by tUnE-yArDs.

    1. Avidemux (http://avidemux.sourceforge.net/) : Avidemux is an Open source video editor. This software program has been designed for multi-purpose video editing and video processing. It has the capability of non-linear video editing, applying visual effects  to video, and transcoding videos into various formats. Avidemux can also insert audio streams into a video file (an action known as multiplexing or “muxing”) or extract audio streams from video files (an action known as “demuxing”).

    2. VirtualDub (http://www.virtualdub.org/) : VirtualDub is a video capture/processing utility for 32-bit and 64-bit Windows platforms, licensed under the GNU General Public License (GPL). VirtualDub is capable of capturing both digital and analog signals. It is compatible with both DirectShow & Video for Windows capture. Capture features is inclusive of- capture to any AVI variant, audio VU meters, overlay and preview modes, histogram, selectable crop area, video noise reduction, auto stop settings (based on capture time, file size, free space, and/or dropped frames), and designate alternate drive(s) for capture overflow. VirtualDub can also help in easy troubleshooting of a common problem with digital cameras that also records videos.

      This is a open source video DVD authoring tool that is available for both linux and windows platform. It is a feature laden to help author video DVD's. The interface is quite user friendly and most tasks can be accomplished with clicks and by drag and drop.

      Infrarecorder is Windows only open source application.
