Bitdefender works perfectly in Ubuntu 12.04 x64. It installs cleanly and the gui shortcut appears in the menu after a system restart. Updating and scanning works ok.

Avast was not allowed to be installed by the ubuntu software center, due to lacking conformity to strict debian packaging policy.

I couldn't find how to start the gui for avg. The command line and update worked.

Also tried avira, but could not find out how to start it.

My bank uses Linux and they also use AVG, so naturally, I use AVG anti-virus :D

Are all/any of these active after installation? I.E. running a service for real time monitoring.

The rule of thumb in Windows is only one AV package at a time. I would like to know if I can trial more than one of these at a time.

Well the things is good here for helpful for all.

I've installed BitDefender antivirus. when i open, there is an error "Loading the antivirus engines, Please wait"

The command $sudo avggui does nothing on my 12.04 when trying to run AVG 2013 flx-r

Tried to install BitDefender using instructions above. Everything worked up until installing the GUI. Terminal said it could not locate package bitdefender-scanner-gui.

drop the "$" it appears to be a pasting error

Linux is commonly known as the virus-free operating system. Because the common virus system is created to run on windows operating system which has no function when opened on Linux.

Great thread and currently running ClamAV as I type.
So far it's found 89 "Threats" and it hasn't finished running yet.

I haven't installed because I'm worried about this machine because as yet we don't appear to be a target for people who make viruses... I'm doing it because I don't want to send something to a friend who's running a Windows OS and they have no protection.

This was a really wonderful post. Thank you for your provided information.

Thanks very much for this info.
well now... avast and avg both crashed on my laptop, and also on my sisters PC running windows SO I wouldn't touch either with someone else's computer.

So I'd use Clam with its GUI
OR
Comodo Anti-virus on Ultimate Edition Linux, as I do on my Win7 side of my dual boot.
And it is working great on Mint 16 on a usb stick as a trial distro to maybe replace UE, someday? Or just Tri-boot.
Thanks again.

Add the following line to the /etc/apt/sources.list file:
deb http://download.bitdefender.com/repos/deb/ bitdefender non-free

and then run:
sudo atp-get update
sudo apt-get install ...
